Life is short … buy the dress

Event season is upon us, and it’s probably one of my favorite times of year. Galas, charity functions, friends’ weddings and parties … Eric and I have a busy summer ahead of us, and the best part besides celebrating? Getting glammed out … obviously.

I’m on the Board of my alma mater’s local alumni association, and our biggest fundraiser is coming up at the end of the month. It’s black tie optional, and we’ll be spending the evening with 800 friends.

Not new to finding the “perfect dress” for events like these, I know it’s critical to start the search early. Too many times I’ve waited until the last minute and ended up either rush ordering something online, annoying the tailor to get alterations done, or settling for something I didn’t love, or even really like for that matter.

So … tonight I went to my favorite store (Nordstrom) just to browse with the hopes that I’d get a sense for what styles are popular for the season and perhaps get started hunting down something to wear to the event.

Typically, it’s a process for me to find a good dress. I have certain stores that I check out (in a certain order), and I always recruit my mom to offer her brutally honest opinion. And let’s be real, some of the best dresses I’ve worn over the years are ones she told me to try on “just for grins” – moms know, they just do.

Anyways, my mom and I were exploring the sea of chiffon, beading and lots of lace, and we stumbled upon THE perfect dress. Never in a million years do one of the first dresses I pick up end up being the one, but tonight the Shopping Gods were among us. Within 90 minutes I not only bought the dress, but did a quick walk through of all the other stores I normally check out to make sure it was exactly what I wanted. Mission accomplished.

Now, if only I could find the right heels …
